The first few days in Brazil
As I don't have facebook and all of you asked to be updated or at least see some pictures, I found a - what-they-call - second best solution: waarbenjij.nu!. I hope you enjoy reading my blog(s) because I plan on updating it every once in a while if you do enjoy it :) For the people who don't want to read a long story, I've written my first impressions briefly at the end of this message ;)
I arrived in Sao Paulo on Monday evening quite late so I took a taxi to my hostel rather than the airport shuttle bus service. On the way to the hostel I realised I was staying in a shanty place since I saw drug dealers and addicts on the way to the hostel. When stopping at stoplights I could see in the corner of my eye how these people would stare at the taxi as if almost deciding to approach the car. I was thankful I took the taxi instead of the bus service. It felt a bit paradoxal knowing you had spent quite a bit of money for a vacation to a place where some people can't even find something to eat. Anyhow, I settled in the hostel just fine.
The next day I woke up in disbelief about me being in Brazil! Am I really in Sao Paulo was the thought that crossed my mind :) lol. I woke up quite early, has breakfast quickly, took a map from the reception and just left into downton Sao Paulo not knowing where I was going to end! :) Evidently, I first got lost because Sao Paulo is overwhelmingly big and the streets are mostly crooked and have different names (the "official" name and the local names and so locals themselves even get confused)! This makes reading and using the map difficult but I quickly found my way and strolled from the one scenary to the other such as Theatro Muncipal, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and so on.
Halfway through the day, I ended up in Bovespa, the Brazilian stock exchange - yes, as an econometrist working in the financial sector, this place is also on my list of things to see - and I was taken by surprise when leaving to the next location. I wanted to go to the highest building in Sao Paulo (called Banespa) so I had asked one of the guys working in Bovespa responsible for the audio and visual tours how to get there. He basically just turned around and approached one of the leaders of a Brazilian student group between the ages 18 and 22, that was on tour in Sao Paulo and so also in Bovespa, and said, can this guy join? And the leader said yes. This became, in general, something I am amazed about in Brazil. The people are so warm and offer genuine help even if they don't know you. To be honest, I believe something like this won't happen in as easily in Holland.
So I joined the student group and got to know the leaders and two or three students. I joined them in Banespa and had lunch with them after and then it was time to part and I practically walked the rest of downtown Sao Paulo. It was a fruitful days and I saw many things so I took it easy in the evening and planned a part of the rest of my trip in Brazil.
The next day I went to the Coptic orthodox church in Sao Paulo as I believe any Copt would do in a country strange to him/her ;) I met Bishop Agathon and Abouna Mekahil who are both extremely humble and serve the Brazilian community (no Copts in Brazil). Bishop Agathon even made breakfast for me, it was really kind! Coincidentally, there were two Coptic ozzies (Austrialians :P) who were touring all of South America for a 1 year! They were already 6 months down the road. After spending the morning at church with them, we went to the one of the centres in downtown Sao Paulo and in the afternoon it was (unfortunately) time for me to leave to the airport on my way to Belo Horizonte! More coming soon!
My first impressions of Brazil are:
strong contrast between poor and rich but a very warm culture which is shared by all classes of the society,
very few who speak english so sometimes difficult to get around if you don't know Portugese!
Keep you guys posted! I'll upload pictures next time.
Até logo! Tchaw!
